Welcome to the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum

Aug 29 2013

President's Message August 2013

We're thrilled to expand our collection of railroad related information with the addition of a facility library. While we've been gradually building a collection of rail related magazines and books for our members and visitors to enjoy, the addition of a separate partitioned area for our collection came about with a wonderful donation of several hundred books by the family of Robert Johnson. Prior to his passing, Robert was an avid rail fan, book collector and an active member of Friends of the Tehachapi Depot.

The planning and construction by Doug Pickard, Dennis Storms and the Monday Crew has created this very nice library located in the Baggage Room area. Stop in and check out the good work done by our volunteers to quickly put together an attractive and functional book location. We'll be working out the details of book usage in the coming weeks, but rest assured that as an FOTD member you'll have access to the library collection soon.

Our educational programs are continuing to serve our community well. Led by Keith Sackewitz, our Education Coordinator, we've provided many group tours of the Depot to local student classes and to out of town groups visiting Tehachapi. We're very glad to hear that this coming school year Jacobsen Middle School is offering a class to students interested in community service. As we're a completely volunteer organization we plan to assist the classroom teacher, Rachel Stanley, with a campus visit to help the kids learn what our volunteers do and to invite them to tour the Depot to see our volunteers at work first hand.

We're soon coming up to the mid-point of our fiscal year, and I'm happy to report that our FOTD financial situation is again healthy and hearty. We're also making good progress on our annual goals that were reported in the last edition of On Track. It's all made possible by the dedicated Depot volunteers that continue to amaze with their dedication and hard work. Thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Please plan to join us the evening of September 10th at 6:00pm for our next General Membership Meeting at the Depot. We'll provide you with a light meal (sandwiches, sides and drinks) and update you on the latest Depot activities. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Lee Henning, Senior Special Agent, Union Pacific Railroad. He has some interesting stories to share and as always, we'll enjoy the company of our fellow Depot lovers and rail fans.

See ya then,
Tim
